Blue Sky DEF

A joint effort between Prime Lube and Brewer-Hendley to provide the Southeastern US with diesel exhaust fluid.

What is DEF?

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) is an ultra-pure urea solution that acts as a reductant. It is carried in a separate tank, and is then injected into the hot exhaust stream and absorbed onto a catalyst. It is of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% deionized water. The purpose of DEF is to reduce Nox concentration in the exhaust emissions produced by diesel engines. The process by with the NOx emissions are reduced is called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

DEF is an aqueous urea solution whose specifications are regulated by standard ISO 22241 70070. It is a non-toxic, nonflammable, non-hazardous and non-explosive substance.

Why is DEF important?

The Environmental Protection Agency released emissions rules in 2010 for diesel vehicles of all sizes. These rules are some of the most stringent emissions standards in the world. Most light-duty and heavy-duty trucks are not able to meet the requirements without using SCR.

Fleet experience with heavy duty trucks model year 2010 and newer suggest 5% fuel savings compared to 2007 model year vehicles with similar engines.

How can DEF help my fleet?

DEF not only decreases the NOx emissions, but also provides significant fuel savings. Fleet experience with heavy duty trucks model year 2010 and newer suggest 5% fuel savings compared to 2007 model year vehicles with similar engines. What is SCR?

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is an emission control technology designed to inject Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) into the exhaust stream that will convert nitrogen oxides (NOx), with an aid of a catalyst, into nitrogen (N2) and water (H2O). It is the after-treatment technology that treats exhaust gas downstream of the engine.

SCR is a system that uses DEF to reduce NO to near zero levels to meet the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 2010 emission regulations.

SCR Process

Diesel engine recycles the exhaust. NO and Particulate Matter travel to DPF
Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) traps the particulate matter and burns off the matter with a low grade heat. Note: The filters do need frequent maintenance. DEF is sprayed into the exhaust stream as the NO travels down to the SCR Catalyst.
DEF and NO enter the SCR Catalyst together where they react and are converted to nitrogen and water vapor.
Nitrogen and water vapor are then released from the tailpipe.
